Judy set up her own company teaching cake decorating …
My name is Judy Kimmins and my passion is for cake decorating/sugarcraft, something I have been doing for over 25 years. What started as a hobby soon developed further and I decided it was time to take it a step further, studying for a City and Guilds qualification.
In 2007 I made the decision to take early severance from my full time job and spend more time following my passion. I had a part time job working for a local charity which opened up opportunities to deliver various baking, pudding making and cake decorating sessions with groups of young people, including those with disabilities. At this stage I also qualified as an adult education tutor and as good fortune would have it, there was a vacancy for a Sugarcraft tutor which I stepped into.
During the past 9 years I have taught sugarcraft for Bromley Adult Education, both in the centres and out in the community at Mottingham and Cotmandene Learning Centres and in Family & Children Centres. These range from short beginners classes to specific skill courses, such as flower making or modelling.
In Sept 2016 I spent a weekend with the British Sugarcraft Guild, of which I was already a member, training to become an accredited demonstrator for the Guild. At this stage I also made a decision to leave my part time Charity job to develop my sugarcraft skills further and share these with others. It was a massive step for me to take and quite scary but I wanted to be able to devote my full attention to sugarcraft without having to ‘fit it around’ my job.
I run a regular weekly class at Warren Road Primary School on a Tuesday evening (term time only). This class has been running for over a year and has enabled the learners to try many new skills. It is very friendly group and we like to have a natter as well. I also run a class on a Wednesday evening for a group of Mums in Penge. This is a beginner’s class and everyone is keen to learn whilst again having a natter. I am also part way through delivering an 8 week baking course for a group of adults with learning disabilities.
I am currently running a 3 week summer themed course at Mottingham Learning Shop and will be starting a new intermediate course at Kentwood Adult Education Centre from Thursday 27th April from 10am to 12 noon for 10 weeks. I have a waiting list for people wanting to learn sugarcraft so am actively seeking a venue to run an evening course in the Bromley/Petts Wood area.
I love sharing my passion and although I do make and decorate cakes to order, I thrive on sharing skills with others. I also pick up tips from others and it seems there is a never ending list of new things to learn.
If you would like to learn a new skill, regardless of age or experience, give me a call and see what I can offer you. I can tailor sessions to meet you requirements for individuals or groups to deliver workshops or demonstrations.

And finally my advice for anyone wanting to start out in cake decorating is…….
Don’t go out and spend loads of money buying expensive cake decorating equipment. Get along to a beginner’s course/introduction session and find out what you can achieve using what you have at home. When you develop further then buy just what you need. It is common for people to buy loads of equipment that they may never use…….beware of getting carried away!
