Michelle – Contributer
Read this inspiring story about Michelle who in 2015 at the age of 48 unfit and overweight took on the challenge of Duathlon.
Michelle’s story ….. At the beginning of 2015 I was considerably overweight and incredibly unfit, then in June last year I started to see a personal trainer, a wonderful woman who helped me to realise that life doesn’t need to be negative, that at 48 I’m not too old and that I am capable of making better choices in order to live a healthier lifestyle.
As part of my new way of thinking I set myself a challenge, to take part in a duathlon (a 5k run, a 21.2k bike and then another 2.5k run) on 10th July this year and in doing so attempt to raise money for a very worthy cause, Breast Cancer Care. I am now 2 stone lighter and a bit fitter and although there is still a very long way for me to go before I can even imagine myself as an athlete, I decided to still attempt it. I knew I wouldn’t break any records but I was determined to take part and finish.
So, how did it go???? ……………… At the start line I looked around at all the young, fit women that stood alongside me and my apprehension reached a whole new level! But my determination was stronger than my nervousness and when the start hooter sounded I went for it. I finished in 1hr 40 minutes, 17th overall, out of a total of 59 entries of women of all ages, shapes and sizes. I finished 2nd in the 45–49 age group and 8th overall on the bike leg.
I am so proud of myself and am ready to put my name down for the next one. Oh.. And I raised £600 for the charity……. If you think you’re too old or too unfit you are wrong, just go for it, I can guarantee you’ll surprise yourself
