Not Too Old To Start a Gardening Business

Kim – Contributer

January 2017

Read all about Kim who decided to resign from teaching career and started a Gardening Business.

My name is Kim and I am 58 years old.

Having been a teacher for 36 years, I decided I didn’t want to continue with the stress and anxiety that is part of the profession and so in February 2016, having paid off my mortgage, I handed in my resignation.

The inspiration came from other teachers who had also made the decision to leave the job, and the desire to have more control over my time.

The challenge was to find enough paid work that would enable me to still do the things I enjoy, but not do so much that I didn’t have the time to do said things. Being a PE teacher by trade I enjoy working outside and I enjoy physical work, this along with a love of gardening led me to offer my services as a gardener/gardening companion to friends and family.

I love it because I am either working with or helping other people, I am able to be creative and I am able to work hard and see the benefits of my labour. I am also working outside which is a great love of mine.

The way forward for me now is to develop my knowledge, skills and experience of the trade so that I can take on greater challenges. The only thing I would have done differently would be to have made the decision sooner.
